Building on its storied lacrosse tradition, the Mahopac High School Varsity lacrosse program has experienced much success since 2007‚During the past few years, more than 20 former Mahopac graduates have gone on to play college lacrosse. Former Mahopac grads have played for top tier Division 1 lacrosse programs, including Army, Cornell, North Carolina and Drexel, to name a few.
The MSA Boys Lacrosse program is dedicated to providing a positive lacrosse experience for our youth and encouraging teamwork, positive self-esteem, sportsmanship, respect for others, personal responsibility, and perseverance, while also ensuringthe correct balance of competitive play. In order to accomplish these goals and best prepare our youth for ongoing opportunities at the high school and collegiate level, MSA lacrosse, starting with the 3rd grade travel team(s), will begin ensuring that players are placed in the appropriate playing environment based upon their current skill set and physical abilities.
Evaluation Process:U9-U14 players will have evaluations to ensure that the players are placed in the correct environment for developmental purposes. Each player should expect to participate in winter training and evaluation sessions at the Carmel Sports Center or Lakeview School as this will be part of the evaluation process.
Skills/Experience: The evaluator will evaluate players utilizing the following (but not limited to) categories; Passing, catching, ground balls, cradling, and shooting. Field Vision/Game sense and positioning will also be looked at.
Evaluations will be based on the following categories: a) skill & experience; b) athleticism/physical ability and c) attitude/commitment/coachability. Each player will be evaluated by experienced coaches who have played or trained at a higher level. They will observe and evaluate players using the following criteria:
Athleticism/Physical Ability: Speed, agility, conditioning and coordination.
Attitude/Commitment/Coachability: Attitude, general and technical aspects of the game, effort, commitment and ability follow directions.
We recognize that the evaluation process can be challenging for players, parents and coaches alike. It is not an exact science, but we are committed to doing our best to make the appropriate, objective selections. We must emphasize to our young players and parents that team placement is not a permanent decision and players will have plenty of opportunities to move up levels as they progress through the MSA Lacrosse Program. It is important to note that there were numerous Varsity standouts (even several who played at the collegiate level) who were not elite players at a younger age. Kids must start somewhere, learn the game, and then gain additional skills and experience so that they can improve their game and compete at higher levels.
All registrants will be notified of their team placement described below. We reserve the right to call-back players for an additional observation when the evaluators believe it’s warranted. This will further ensure everyone has a fair and equal chance to demonstrate their abilities.
Travel Team Program
Once Evaluations or tryouts are completed, U11- U14 players will be assigned to the appropriate level team.
It is expected that Spring Lacrosse be the priority for players selected for the highest level teams as one is making a commitment to play at the highest level of competition. Added travel may be involved for the top tiered teams.
For those participants who are not chosen for top tiered teams, the teams will be more instructional based which should help progress them towards a higher level of play. They will practice 1 to 3 time per week, play 8-10 games or scrimmages and participate in (1+) Jamboree. Note: The number of games may be dependent upon availability of other programs with the same level of players. Coaches may opt to add additional games but the expense will be passed on to the team.
There will be a season end closing ceremony or individual team picnic/or party and an alumni game (date pending).
Thank You, MSA Boys Lacrosse
